Finding the right foil fencing mask fit

Different fencing techniques require a different mask for protection and accessories. Our foil masks offer unrestricted vision, breathability, and comfort. A correct fit for your fencing mask is necessary to ensure optimal comfort, performance, and safety. Here are some steps to identify the right foil fencing mask fit.

      1. To determine the correct size for a fencing mask, measure the widest part of your head in centimeters. Check the fencing mask measuring guidelines to ensure that your head falls within the appropriate range.
      2. Be sure to look at the fencing mask measuring guidelines to find the range of your head size fits for the sizing chart.
      3. After receiving your mask order, it's recommended to try it on with your coach to ensure the perfect fit. Your coach will guide you in how the foil fencing mask should feel when worn.
      4. It is essential to fasten the straps when checking the fit yourself securely. Ensure the helmet is snug around your forehead, temples, and sides of your face but without causing any pressure points. It should not obstruct your vision in any way.
      5. Move your head while performing fencing movements to check your mobility and vision. This will ensure that you can move and see usually. Try lunges and other fencing movements to make sure you don't feel too heavy or restricted.

Frequently asked questions about the foil fencing mask

What is the difference between an epee mask and a foil mask?

The material used for masks in fencing is wire mesh with gaps of less than 1/10 of an inch. The wire is typically made of stainless steel and has a minimum diameter of 1 millimeter. The bib of the mask is made of cloth that can withstand 1600 Newtons, which is twice as strong as uniform material. A safety strap is included at the back of the mask for added protection.

Foil masks must not extend below the chin and are insulated internally and externally with an impact-resistant plastic material. The bib must be shaped to reach below the collar bone prominences (clavicles) for epee masks.

What is the difference between foil and sabre masks?

When fencing with a foil or sabre, a conductive mask bib is necessary to register hits in the target area. The target area for a foil includes the torso, groin, and lower mask bib, while a sabre consists of the torso, arms, and head. Both require a mask wire to connect to the lame.

Ultimately, your foil fencing mask must satisfy safety regulations to keep you secure following stringent requirements while on the piste. Utilizing the wrong mask could result in disqualification or safety issues during your training session or competition.

The Right Foil Fencing Mask for You

When searching for a suitable foil fencing mask, it is important to choose one that includes a metallic mesh bib that covers the target area above the waist, which provides for the head and part of the arms. It is imperative to prioritize safety, proper fit, and adherence to regulations to ensure optimal protection and accurate scoring during bouts.

      Foil fencing mask

Very good quality, this mask will last wear and tear. My only problem with it is that it isn't as flexible as other masks I've used. I wear glasses, so a flexible mask is useful to me. Still a very good mask, just would prefer a little more flexibility.
