“The kids who started fencing with me at age seven are the same ones now competing for college teams. Get them young, give them safe gear, and watch what happens.”
Tim Morehouse · Three-time Olympian, Olympic silver medalist · Founder, TMFC and Fencing in the Schools (501c3)

Fencing is one of the most underused sports in American schools. The equipment looks intimidating but the entry-level gear is plastic, foam, and entirely safe in a gym or classroom. Kids pick up the basics in a single 45-minute lesson. And — unlike most sports — fencing keeps every kid moving and engaged the entire class.

Through Tim's 501(c)(3) Fencing in the Schools, founded in 2011, we have brought fencing to thousands of students across NYC's public and charter schools. The program started with 1,500 students at six schools in East and West Harlem, in partnership with the Democracy Prep charter network. We have since worked with KIPP, Success Academy, and other school networks across the city.

Beyond fitness, fencing has a reputation as one of the strongest sports for college admissions to highly selective colleges — alongside crew, squash, and a handful of other niche sports concentrated at top schools. For a kid in the right program, fencing can be a real path to opportunity.
